Cameron White was deservedly and understandably the recipient of the man of the match award after he blasted 78 off of 46 balls. The Deccan Chargers claimed their first win of the Indian Premier League and a big part of that success was thanks to a strong first innings total. That total was created by White, who hit a game high five sixes on his way to his first IPL half century.

It is strange to consider the fact that a high profile player like White has not managed an IPL fifty prior to this performance. He is a player with a great reputation, especially in twenty 20 cricket and the sort of player who it is just assumed has scored a lot of runs. The Chargers have really under-achieved so far this year, so they will be pretty desperate in hoping that this is a sign of things to come from White and not the oh so familiar story of one big knock, but no consistency.

White’s innings was notable for its composure. He and Sangakarra really ‘re-built’ the innings after the quick loss of Deccan’s two openers. He gave himself 10-20 balls before he really started going after the bowling. When he did eventually unleash, he did so with incredible ferocity. He struck the ball straight particularly well, including a couple of really classy straight drives down the ground.

The pace and style of White’s innings was particularly interesting and notable, because it takes after a lot of the better big hitters and the way they have been playing. It is noticeable just how reserved Chris Gayle starts his innings before trying to blast the attack all over the place. If it goes wrong, it can be very bad news because the run rate is hit hard, but it seems to be the preferred strategy of big hitters. It worked very well in a fine effort from White in this game.
