The Chennai Super Kings defense of their title will continue after they beat the Mumbai Indians by 38 runs in the eliminator match. The Super Kings will now play against the Delhi Daredevils to decide who faces the Kolkata Knight Riders in the final.
Chennai got a solid foundation in their first innings. Mike Hussey and Subramaniam Badrinath rescued the team from a disastrous start where they lost their first two wickets while scoring just a single run. Hussey scored 49 off of 39 balls, while Badrinath made 47 off of the same number. Once again the team slipped from losing two quick wickets to fall from 95 for two to 106 for four.
The stage had been set and it very much turned into cometh the hour cometh the man as Chennai captain MS Dhoni stepped up and literally smashed 51 runs off of just 20 balls. He was more than ably assisted by Dwayne Bravo who scored 33 off of 14. The consequence was an imposing first innings total of 187-5. Pace bowlers Dhawal Khulkarni and Lasith Malinga both took a lot of punishment conceding more than 40 runs each off of their four over spells.
The total always looked just about out of Mumbai’s reach. Dwayne Smith spanked 38 off of 22 balls but despite some nice blows from other players; no-one else scored more than 20 in the Indians innings.
It was a strong all-round bowling performance from an attack that hasn’t always performed. Ravinda Ashwin, Dwayne Bravo ad Shadab Jakati all bowled economically and the wickets were shared.
The loss is a hugely disappointing result for a Mumbai side that must have fancied themselves from the very beginning of the season, but could never quite put together a consistent performance.
