The Kings Punjab XI are still in with a shout of the Indian Premier League playoffs after an impressive comprehensive victory over the Chennai Super Kings. The bowling attack pinned Chennai’s batting down and set the game up. It was a track that didn’t play too dissimilarly to the track in Mohali and it looked like the Kings XI were right at home on this surface.

Adam Gilchrist was back in the side and he made an immediate impact taking several catches, especially early on with the gloves, and then playing the crucial guiding innings on this surface. Dwayne Bravo had scored 48 earlier for Chennai and had demonstrated that a more patient approach with stronger play square of the wicket was the way forward.

Gilchrist seemed to model his innings on that hitting 64 off of 46 balls. It was an innings that included two sixes. He was ably supported in a first wicket stand by Mandeep Singh, who scored 24 and while a flurry of wickets did create some temporary uncertainty, Gilchrist took over the game to ensure that his team secured a six wicket win. They achieved victory with a huge three and a half overs to spare and made their own bowling look a lot better in the process.

The Super Kings are now perched precariously having played all 16 of their games. They will be relying on other results going their way as the Kings Punjab XI have one game left, while Bangalore and Rajasthan each have two.

Gilchrist’s team still faces a tough task as their last game is in Delhi on Saturday, but they must now believe that they can do it. Other results will still need to go their way, but if they beat the Daredevils, then they give themselves a great chance and at least insure that they finish ahead of Chennai.
