The Chennai Super Kings just didn’t quite score enough runs to put the Kolkata Knight Riders under any sort of serious pressure. Instead, captain and veteran batsman Gautum Gambhir guided his team to victory extremely skilfully. Gambhir is a batsman who continues to remind cricket lovers that twenty 20 cricket is not about slogging or purely about hard hitting. He is just a batsman who goes out there and ups the tempo of his natural game. He has enjoyed quite spectacular form for the Knight Riders so far and has arguably been the team’s most valuable player and the biggest reason for their success.
Chennai’s bowling struggled to have a meaningful impact defending a total that was clearly too low. Albie Morkel set the tone early by bowling too many wides and giving away extras, while many of the spinners were just ineffectual. Dwayne Bravo offered some energy and buzz to an otherwise fairly lifeless bowling attack, but even despite getting Jacques Kallis out, it proved to be just a bit too much of the Chennai bowling attack. Kolkata were able to pace themselves effectively with a couple of different partners settling in alongside Gambhir in Kallis and Manoj Tiwary.
This was an important game for Gambhir and Kolkata. It really solidifies them as a serious contender in this year’s IPL and makes them one of the teams to watch. The Delhi Daredevils have been the team of the tournament so far, but Kolkata have shown a lot of good form at home and going to a place like Chennai and claiming a win is a big step in the development of their side. Their bowling attack led by Brett Lee and Sunil Narine also makes them a threat in any conditions.
The Super Kings continue their up and down form as they go for their third consecutive IPL championship. They are definitely a good team, but parity is the order of the day in this competition and the defending champs place in the semi-finals is not assured.
kolkata emerged a strong contender last year. but this year they have proved their worth
It seemed like it was Chennai's match after their batting performance but KKR proved that wrong
