Kolkata ended up easing to victory against Delhi. Gautum Gambhir and Brendan McCullum put on 68 for the first wicket inside the first seven overs and the game was set up for an easy victory for the Knight Riders. Gambhir played in his usual sublime form cracking 36 off of 21 balls while hitting four fours and a six. He looked in absolute control of his game once again and continues to enjoy an outstanding IPL.

However, it was McCullum who took responsibility for leading the innings forward. The high priced player has been something of a disappointment through much of the season but he scored 56 off of 44 balls today and showed a willingness to apply himself. He and Jacques Kallis got the score up 128 before the fall of the second wicket. Both veteran batsman fell to Yumesh Yadav in two balls as the Knight Riders slipped momentarily to 128-3. However, with nearly five overs remaining, there was little danger of Kolkata’s later middle order slipping up. Extras played a role as Yusuf Pathan eased his team to what turned into a very comfortable victory.

It was a disappointing performance from what has been a very good Daredevils bowling attack. Varun Aaron was actually the pick of the bowlers, while the likes of Irfan Pathan and Morne Morkel were picked on early by Kolkata’s opening pair. Still, Delhi are pretty much assured of a playoff place and should still feel confident about this match-up should it occur in the knockout stage.

The win moves Kolkata into first place of the IPL. This is the first time that this team has led the competition at any significant stage. It has been an impressive effort by a team that has made itself a reputation for under-performing. The top order is really coming together and this is a team with a good bowling attack.
