As a supporter of the Chargers and based on where they ended up in Season 1, I havent really given my team chances beyond the Semi Finals. Now that they have "managed" to reach the finals, not in a manner they would personally would have liked to, they have at least given their fans a ray of hope. A shock win will put them in the finals. It is the teams like the Chargers that can win finals if they are allowed by their opponents to sneak into that final game. The reason I am saying this is because self belief is something that comes on that D-Day and someone like Gilly and Symmo know what it is all about playing in the finals. They have been there and seen it many times together as a winning outfit.
After allowing someone like Manish Pandey to get away with 114 runs off the 171 on board, the Charger's on- field performance was left wanting. As Gilly rightly put it yesterday, one man could make the difference on a day and yesterday it was Pandey all over. I am convinced that Chargers are not reading their fan views nor thinking deep about the playing conditions. They should have played Smith and given him match experience which is crucial going into Semi Finals. I would hope sense prevails today when they choose their final 11. Supersport Park and the same wicket that was used yesterday on the offer today will only mean that a combination of slow bowlers can win the game. My views were the same in the preceding blog. If this is not convincing, then rewind yesterday's game and you will see what Kumble did introducing him in the opening spell. Earlier last month when i had the opportunity to watch the 2nd T20 game between Aussies and the Proteas, i wrote off the Proteas when they managed to put less than 160 on the board. That was however a good score to defend with Van De Merwe and Botha in the team and they made the score look daunting. The wickets at the end of the season in South Africa are slower and almost dead. This is one of the reasons why slow bowlers have done exceedingly well. The likes of Raina, Rohit, Murali, Jakati, Ojha can cause havoc. Yuvraj getting hattricks in the season says it all.
Chargers should sit together and talk about the last match they played against the DareDevils. It was one of the losses that was beyond cricketing imaginations. From the jaws of victory they snatched the loss. Sehwag and Co were looking down the barrel and the match was expected to end before the 20 overs were bowled. A tricky spell by Rajat Bhatia finished it all. So, Chargers in a way are lucky that they are facing DareDevils yet again in a big match. In my opinion Chargers have a psycological edge over the Daredevils. They came damn close to a dominating win in their last game and the loss in the semi Finals from Season 1 will also make the DareDevils nervous. These are two edges that Chargers must captalise on. They must decide which batsman would take on which bowler. Danniel Vettori could be a threat today. He excels in big games and today's opportunity is ideal for him to perform. Chargers need to watch out for spells from Vettori and Nannes. They could target others of the likes of Nehra and Bhatia pretty well. Gilly, Herche and Symmo and Rohit hold the trump card today. If these guys dominate, then they can put the game beyond the reach of the DareDevils. Indeed, they could shock the DareDevils, if they get their acts together. A word of caution would be that Chargers havent been successful chasing big scores. So anything over 160 will not be easy at the Centurion!
Chargers have to come up with clear field strategies for Sehwag, Gambhir and above all the dangerman- AB DeVilliers. For a change, the strategy break will also matter for both the teams. A lot of hype would be created in the next few hours as part of the build up. I tend to agree with Dhoni's views that the next 3 hours would matter. And it is true indeed- Gilly and Co, your next 3 hours on the field will be the test of your mental strength. Gilly must inspire his team more than he did until now. All his big match experience together with his tennis ball grip should work for the Chargers today.
Like many Charger supporters, we fans are hoping to see them play at the Bull Ring come Sunday.
All the Best for now....
