The first thing I decided to do after watching the first Semi Finals was to read my earlier blogs. The first blog i wrote on this website as a Deccan supporter was titled "Deccan's Charging Ahead to Glory". That was in the early part of the tournament after which Deccan's slipped with their performance and made things difficult for them. It feels great to watch a team from Zero to get close to become a Hero in the second season of IPL. Today, they are one step away from being the champion team and so I chose to rephrase the title i used in my first blog.
Having said that there is still some work to do. The T20 version can spring surprise and shock in a matter of just couple of overs. We have had such close results in this season already with teams winning from losing position and vice versa. However, inspired Gilly and Co decided to put that behind them and start afresh yesterday. Once in top four, the league games and results from them and the points table doesn't matter. The top four teams have to start all over again and the best team will win on the day. It happened to be our Chargers who showcased a superb performance last evening. Congratulations to the Chargers!
Anything over 160 at the Centurion in the current playing conditions would not have been a easy chase. In my opinion Gilly's innings made all the difference. The pace with which he scored the runs gave his middle and lower order enough balls to get the remaining runs. That is where the Deccans have faultered in the past and Gilly exactly knew it.In fact yesterday the impact of Gilly's innings was such that the team would have won even with couple of maiden overs after he departed! It was modest of him to say that he wanted to keep the run rate in check when he justified his pacy innings. We have seen this man blasting some of the best attacks in world cricket in big games. His Innings during World Cup 2007 Finals with that tennis ball grip is something one wouldn't forget. The Lankans were clueless on that day. All through that tournament he was out of form, but he came all guns firing and the innings in the finals made all the difference.
Yesterday it was Gilly's day and most would naturally admit it. He got his team selection right. Though all fans expected Smith to play, he decided to go with Harris. Initially I am sure we fans thought that decision could backfire. But after the kind of start Harris gave dismissing two wickets in this first over, Deccans did not allow Daredevils to get away easily. Sehwag doesn't care what happens at the other end. His mantra is pretty simple- If there is a ball to be hit- just hit. He was looking dangerous and made Delhi feel on the top at the strategic break. This break has spoiled the momentum of most teams. One thing is certain that the team owners would oppose this break next season. After the strategic time out, Gilly and Co put enough pressure on the Delhi that they could gather a paltry 153 on the board. The bowlers did a fantastic job to restrict them to that score. The field placements were right and once it is not your day, the balls finds a fielder even in the best of the shots. That is what happened to Daredevils.
It was a off day for the Daredevils. They didnt look the same dominating team even while they were batting. Sehwag also looked not so the Viru we know of. He played, in my opinion with a cluttered mind. I say this because the shot he would play on the delivery that got him out would have been out of the park on another day. Playing in Big Match is always about keeping your nerves. The best Indian team with the in-form who's who of Indian cricket that qualified for the 2003 World Cup Finals couldn't handle the pressure as well.
The Chargers capitalised on everything that came their way yesterday. They came in with a clear plan. As expected Gilly started to attack the bowlers. Pitched up, Good Length, Taking Pace Off didnt really bother him. He showed disrespect to every bowler that came along the way between him and victory. It was a inning that he would cherish for a long time and so would his fans. The crowd at the Supersport park were indeed lucky to watch that kind of knock- It was a perfect treat.
The potential finalist from the second semi final game today has probably started thinking how could they stop this rampage when Gilly returns to the Bull Ring on Sunday. If he repeats a similar inning on Sunday then Chargers are unstoppable and will in all probability win the title. What is now important is for Gilly to keep his team inspired. He must mentally prepare Symmo and Rohit to be ready to up the ante just in case he cannot repeat it on Sunday. There is no point in putting all your money on Gilly to fire again for it is a team game at the end of the day. The next 3 hours repeat- Friday performance on the field will take them to Glory. They know it as much as all others.
Best of Luck Once Again....Now we want the Deccan Chargers name engraved on that trophy. You can do it....Go Chargers Go!
PS: I am not a Telguite, but someone could wish them best in that language as part of comments to this blog.
