Bangalore Royal Challengers are no more in the league of the Kolkata Knight Riders. This is the first and foremost thinking that must get into the Deccan Chargers' (DC) dressing room. Deccan Chargers are fortunate that they would play the last league game thus have a clear picture of what they must do. With crucial games coming up for other teams (RR and KXI Punjab) who with the Chargers are vying for the remaining two semi final spots, DC would have already started to feel the heat. The fact on ground is the Chargers have chosen to be where they are.
A win by RR and KXI Punjab will put the chargers in a spot of bother. Victory for KXI Punjab will give them a semi final berth but a loss for Punjab will require Chargers to ensure that they up their net run rate even if they end up on the losing side against the fancied Royal Challengers. Thus, chargers have everything in their hands to decide their fate. In my opinion they have no choice but to go all out for a outright win. RR have to win as well to stay in the hunt and then wait and watch what would happen to Chargers and KXI Punjab. So, those are the permutuations for now.
Coming back to the earlier two games, one must agree that Chargers came close on both occassions. They upset KKR on the previous evening. Poor and Immature Captaincy and attrocious strategy continued in their dressing room. Buchanan feels that presence of Umar Gul would have tilted the season in their favor. That says all the frustrations in him.
Another point that is surprising is the back to back matches that DC had to play. Why was this team chosen to play back to back games. Even if it were back to back, why wasnt the game on the next day played as the second game? Well, these are not excuses for losing, however, with the energy burn out levels and the number of games played it would have been fair to give chargers couple of hours more to rest and get back in action. At best they could have played today (18th May) as the first game. Something has gone wrong with the schedulers and am sure they too realised it too late! We must therefore appreciate the efforts made by chargers coming close to winning yet again on Sunday. I felt that the 3rd run could have been attempted as the non striker was half way thru the pitch and the other batsman chose to walk away without looking at his partner. That was sheer lack of application of basic skills of playing the last ball of the match. I am sure someone has observed that and will make amends in the games going forward.
The playing 11 would be crucial in the game on Thurday. The wicket at the supersports park will continue to be slower. Chasing wouldn't be an easy option especially with slow, medium pace and spin attack that Royal Challengers would employ at the Centurion. Dwane Smith, Hershe, Symmo and Gilly will need to be in the playing 11 to give extra depth to both batting and bowling. I feel these four in the team with bowling options from RP and Ojha would make the impact felt. One thing is certain, a win will allow them to continue their stay in the rainbow nation and keep them in the hunt.
Thus for the Chargers it is about skills and application of cricketing mind this Thursday.
