New Delhi: Mayank Agarwal carried on his fantastic form as India A spoilt South Africa's warm-up game of their India tour, comfortably beating the visiting team by eight wickets in a T20 game here on Tuesday (Sept 29).
Trying to chase a challenging victory target of 190, the India A team, inspired by Mayank's 49-ball-87 and his outstanding 119-run opening wicket stand with Manan Vohra (56), reached the target with two balls to spare.
If JP Duminy (68 not out), Faf du Plessis (42 retired hurt) caused a lot of discomfort to the Indian bowlers, the Indian opening duo was a bit better in dealing with the Proteas attack.
Although Mayank who was ready and has practised a lot at the Airforce Sports Complex ground for Delhi Daredevils could perform to his best. His brilliant form in limited overs (List A and T20) for India A has been spectacular over the past two months and he would prefer a chance of being in the 30-member team from the list for World T20 next year.
Mayank and Manan's collected more than century-plus runs in 12.4 overs ensured a win as the South African new ball bowlers found it hard to bowl in humid conditions. Mayank, who has impressed selectors in shorter formats, was able to stand against the South African bowling.
On a pitch that had even bounce, seamers Kylie Abbott, Chris Morris and Kagiso Rabada were unable to play the right length.
Both Manan and Mayank, the two IPL players were able to use their skills to deal with short of length deliveries as they cut and pulled with equal disdain.
The two leg-spinners Imran Tahir and Eddie Leie could not find their length either and were repeatedly thrashed to the boundaries.
Vohra was out after he had made 56 off 42 balls with eight fours and a six - his first impressive T20 innings in the past one year.
Mayank continued to play in company of Sanju Samson (31 not out), adding 52 for the second wicket but got out when in deep mid-wicket by David Miller off Merchant de Lange's bowling. Mandeep Singh completed the task as South Africans sufferent a pooor start in their tour.
Brief scores: South Africans: 189 for three in 20 overs (JP Duminy 68), India A: 193 for two in 19.2 overs (Mayank Agarwal 87).
