Quite an eventful week was the last week. There were 11 matches played in the week in which Kolkata displaced Delhi from the top by defeating them and the latter regaining the top spot against Deccan Chargers. Mumbai defeated Chennai in one of the most thrilling matches of this season. AB de Villiers showed why he is one of the best finishers in the game today with an extraordinary performance against Deccan Chargers. Chennai Super Kings managed to stay in the top 4 with a win over Delhi. Here’s a review of the top 5 matches this week.
Match 49: Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians
Chennai Super Kings posted a competitive 173-8 in 20 overs owing to contributions from a misfiring top order. Vijay, Raina, Bravo and Dhoni were all amongst the runs. Mumbai’s charge was led by the master Sachin Tendulkar with a masterly 74 off 44 balls. He was ably supported by Rohit Sharma with 60 off 46 balls. A big collapse saw them slip from 134-1 to 159-8. Dwayne Smith, playing his first match for Mumbai, arrived at the scene with a blast. He smashed the last 3 balls of Ben Hilfenhaus for 14 runs and won the match for Mumbai Indians.
Match 50: Deccan Chargers vs Royal Challengers Bangalore
The super Sunday saw another amazing match being played. Batting first, Deccan Chargers scored 181-2. Shikhar Dhawan played a nice knock at the top scoring 73 off 52 balls. In reply, Bangalore started somewhat slowly with Gayle scoring 26 off 22 balls. Dilshan was the predominant scorer with 71 off 54 balls. But the show was stolen by perhaps the best batsman in the world today, AB de Villiers. He scored a magnificent 47 off 17 balls with 23 of them coming from an over from a smoking Dale Steyn.
Match 53: Deccan Chargers vs Kings XI Punjab
Kings XI Punjab have been slowly and steadily climbing to the top and increasing their chances of qualifying for the play-offs. They batted first in this match and scored 170-5. The main contributor was Mandeep Singh who scored 75 off 48 balls at the top of the order. He has been playing well and is the reason for the Kings latest success. Deccan Chargers folded for 145.
Match 55: Deccan Chargers vs Delhi Daredevils
Deccan Chargers scored a mammoth 187, Shikhar Dhawan again was the main contributor 84 off 49 balls. Captain Cameron White also scored 64 off 40 balls. White’s form has been the talking point in this tournament. In reply, Daredevils lost Sehwag in the first over to severly dent the chase. What followed was mayhem. David Warner, playing only his second match in this edition of IPL scored a blazing century off 50 balls. He was ably supported by Naman Ojha who scored a well made 64 off 46 balls with 5sixes. With this win, Delhi Daredevils retained the number 1 spot which they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders in their last match.
Match 59 Chennai Super Kings vs Delhi Daredevils
Chennai Super Kings needed to win their every match in order to have chance to qualify for the play-offs. They met table toppers Delhi in their last match. Ben Hilfenhaus bowled one of the best opening spells of this year’s IPL. He picked up three main wickets, that of Sehwag, Warner and Jayawardene in each of his three opening overs to derail Delhi’s batting. Delhi never really recovered from those losses and managed only 114. Chennai easily chased down the target in 16 overs to keep their hopes alive of making it to the play-offs.
